March 2013
Working with the Heanor's Trader Association we have funded a trail period to give shoppers and visitors to our town centre free car parking.
Heanor's Parking Pay Back Scheme will reimburse your parking charges at participating shops on the high street.
February 2013
Heanor Town Centre Public Toilets WILL STAY OPEN after I secured a further 12 months for the Borough Council to keep these facilities available following the growing of Heanor's Market to 20 stalls, and whilst the £9.5m redevelopment of Florence Shipley Care Home gets redeveloped (see below). I am working with the Traders Association who are interested in taking over this facility to service the market, plus, once the new care and community centre opens the town will have additional public toilet facilities available in this new-build.
£24 million Regeneration Benefits achieved for Heanor
Working together with residents and groups, local councils and businesses, I have so far secured £24 million investments, with more developments in the pipeline, but I would like us to achieve much more over the next four years:
A New School for Aldercar and Langley Mill - Aldercar Language Community School - Capital Building Investment
£14.5m secured capital conservative commitment for a new Aldercar & Langley Mill Secondary School (opens in a new window)
£9.5m new build of Florence Shipley Care Home (opens in a new window) into a new Florence Shipley Residential and Community Care Centre with a build start date of April 2013.
Heanor High Street
After setting up Heanor's Town Team (opens in a new window), unfortunately our Portas Pilot bid wasn't selected, so the team continues to work hard together to do it ourselves:
Working with Heanor's independent traders, we secured a 5 year business plan to run and grow the towns Market, after I secured the grant to fund the Market Manager, in a few short weeks taking over the running, Heanor's Market from a start of 3 stall holders is now 16 traders and growing.
As part of the Town Team we raised £1,100 in July 2012 during a charity absail down St Lawrence's Church (opens in a new window) tower to raise funds for the Community Fair which has been another great success from our community leaders.
In 2013, I'm working with Heanor's landlords and AVBC to deliver a Community Shop to allow artisan's using the Community Fair to keep growing and increase the potential of them becoming new traders expanding onto the market place and high street.
From February 2013 were hoping to follow Matlock Traders and offer a car parking pay back scheme.
Heanor College Mundy Street
Plans have been agreed by Government to re-develop Mundy Street, Derby College the former Grade2 listed Grammar School into Derbyshire's first Studio School (opens in new window) which will give 14 to 19 year olds an alternative to mainstream schools. In addition to the national curriculum, studio schools work closely with employers and community organisations to enable students to take part in enterprise projects and gain paid work experience to boost their employment skills and experience.
It is now guarnteed that 300 enterprising young people will be taking their first career steps in Heanor and along with the staff at this new Digital College, shops in Heanor will directly benefit from this new trade.
Helping Residents and Groups
Along with helping residents improve their local area and quality of life, securing the anti-slip resurfacing on the A6007 Hassock Lane South in 2010 and in January 2013 the redeployment of a speed camera (opens in a new window) to discourage drivers entering this bend at speed and preventing crashes in residents’ gardens:
Securing the adoption and new surfacing of a footpath (Heanor West) linking Joan Avenue to High Street in the town (opens in a new window) after residents said no one was listening and others said it wouldn't happen.
'The greatest part of being a Councillor is helping people, and I pledge to always try my best for anyone who contacts me for assistance'.
I believe there's much more to deliver for our area, whilst continuing my pledges to protect the green belt from inappropriate development, keeping council tax at zero increases whilst improving services we pay for, and keeping our streets and home safe from crime.
I would be grateful for your vote in May and if returned to the County Council, will build on your confidence in me to make sure Greater Heanor, and Heanor as a whole continues to secure investment and support where it's needed.
